The Kingdom of God is Like…

Matthew 13:31-35, 44-45

This week, in lieu of a sermon, we spent time Dwelling in the Word. Read along with us!

Read through Jesus parables several time slowly. Each time, reflect on one of the prompts below. Allow yourself to sink more deeply into the word in each reading.

  • What word or phrase stands out or stays with you?
  • What questions are raised?
  • What images, stories, ideas or connections does this passage bring up?

31 He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32 it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

33 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and reburied; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46 on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Having read through the passage several times now, how would you finish the phrase, “The Kingdom of God is like…” Here’s Pastor Amy’s example:

The Kingdom of God is like a church whose members each chose a patch of fabric. When everyone had chosen and placed their piece, they were quilted together into a many-colored heart that adorns their worship space.
